Definition of Moisture Content (MC) and Moisture Regain (MR)
Determination and Testing of MR and MC
Relation Between MR and MC
Mathematical Problems related to MR and MC
Importance of MR and MC
Factors affecting regain of any fibre
Standard MR and MC of common fibres
Moisture Content: The ratio between weight of moisture and
original weight of the sample expressed in percentage is called MC.
Moisture Content Percentage, C = đž/đē Ãđđđ
Moisture Content = đž/đē Ãđđđ%
Moisture Regain: The ratio between weight of moisture and
oven dry weight of the sample expressed in percentage is called MC.
Moisture Regain Percentage, C = đž/đĢ Ãđđđ
Moisture Regain= đž/đē Ãđđđ%
Where, W = Weight of moisture
S = Original weight of the sample
D = Oven dry weight of the sample
Testing Procedure of Moisture Content and Regain:
Temperature 105 degree celcius for 2 hours.
Problem 1: Calculate Moisture Regain & Oven dry weight of a fibre whose Sample weight is 22 gm and Moisture content is 7%.
Problem 2: The weight of a sample of cotton was found to be 105 grains. When heated at 105°C for 2 hours, the weight of the sample was reduced to 100 grains. Find out the Moisture Regain and Content.
Problem 3: Calculate the Standard regain of the blend 65/35 PC. [Here Standard regain of polyester is 0.4% and of cotton is 8.5%]
Problem 4: If the oven dry weight of a fibre is 56 gm and its MC is 5%, then calculate (i) Weight of moisture (ii) Sample weight (iii) Moisture Regain.
Problem 5: Calculate the Weight of moisture, Moisture Content and Oven Dry weight of a fibre whose Sample weight is 30 gm and MR is 13.5%.
Answer of the mathematical problems:
(1) 7.53 %, 20.46 gm
(2) 5 %, 4.76 %
(3) 3.235 %
(4) 2.95 gm, 58.95 gm, 5.26%
(5) 300 % [Theoritically]
Material Standard Regain
Raw Cotton 8.5%
Cotton Yarn 7-7.5%
Silk 11%
Wool 17%
Viscose 13%
Flax and Hemp 12%
Acetate 6%
Nylon 6, 6:6 4%
Terelene 0.4%
Example of Importance:
1,000 kg 1,000 kg
7% MC 8% MC
70 Kg Moisture 80 kg Moisture
& 930 kg Dry fibre 920 kg Dry fibre
