Switch gear and Protection is a subject where a student will deal with various types of electrical equipment such as CT, PT, CB, DS, lightning arrester, surge diverter and surge absorber which are employed in industries, power stations, grid sub-stations, domestic and commercial appliances etc. They are also required to carry out remedial measures for faults/abnormalities in machines/equipment in power system using appropriate diagnostic instruments/devices. Such knowledge of the pre-requisite for these fields will help the students for effective discharge of their duties. It is essential that the diploma students should develop skills of operating various controls and switch gear in power system. This course attempts to develop these skills in students and hence it is a core course for all electrical engineers.
Learning Outcome (Theoretical) After Completing the subject, students will be able to: 1. Interpret power system protection 2. Explain different types of switchgear components 3. Elucidate transformer protection and busbar protection 4. Analyze protection against transients and surges 5. Illustrate auto-reclosing and synchronizing 6. Interpret smart grid and SCADA system Learning Outcome (Practical) After undergoing the subject, students will be able to: 1. Operate circuit breaker and sub-station 2. Sketch layout and single line diagram of sub-station 3. Operate SCADA system 4. Handle protection system of busbar, transformer and alternator 5. Identify various faults in power system 6. Operate different types of circuit breakers in power system 7. Operate different types of relays in power system
